Ash Ranges is a large area of heathland in Surrey used by the Army, so is inaccessible for most of the year. It is open, however, on certain
days such as public holidays and I visited for the first time on Boxing Day 2008, ostensibly to see a wintering Great Grey Shrike. I failed
to see the Shrike but enjoyed walking around this wonderful wild area. I found out later a ‘ring-tailed’ Hen Harrier had been there the day
after my visit so included it in this painting, imagining its plumage complementing the colours of the heath lit by the early morning sun.
