Ian Griffiths or just Griff as he is better known lives and works on the Lizard peninsular in Cornwall. He was born in Yorkshire
in 1956 and has lived throughout the UK around the coast never more than a couple of miles from the sea, sometimes within yards.
Griff has been exhibiting since 1971 including Whitby art gallery, Westminster hall London, York, Leeds, Poland, Brighton and
many other places far and wide. But it wasn’t until December 2006 that he became a full time artist specialising in birds.
Since then Griff has exhibited at NEWA, SWLA, TWASI and MIWAS plus galleries from Suffolk to the Isles of Scilly, the US and
Holland. He is looking forward to exhibiting at the WWT at Slimbridge in November/ December as it was here when he met Sir Peter
Scott in 1971 who was very complimentary and encouraging about his first bird paintings. Having travelled extensively mainly in
the tropics, he also paints parrots to raise funds for the conservation projects via the world parrot trust where he is their
artist in residence.
‘My work is a mixed bag of styles, techniques and mediums as I like to experiment, I suppose I am best known for my birds
associated with water, but there is a growing call for my impasto style oils which I have been developing recently. What ever the
bird I prefer to study and sketch the subject and spend many hours in the field and living where I do you never know what will
turn up.’
Griff had two paintings reach the final of the BBC wildlife artist of the year competition 2011 and was selected as a winner with a
Kingfisher painting in the 'Animals in their enviroment' catagory. The winners will be in a special edition of Augusts BBC Wildlife
magazine.
