I never realised how small lesser spotted woodpeckers are! What a
beautiful little bird. I have painted this one life-size and many
thanks to Ian Dickerson for resource material gathered from Paxton Pits
Nature Reserve. I was excited to stumble upon a website entry regarding
the large tortoiseshell butterfly (which I remember seeing when I was a
little girl), thought to be extinct in Britain. Visit a posting and

Stuart says: "This species has been extinct in Britain for about 20
years but I saw this one on Tuesday 26 June at Ventnor, Isle of Wight."
How encouraging!
