Philip Gibson
Phil was born in North Staffordshire and he has always showed a strong interest in art and the outdoors. After
attending Newcastle School of Art, he moved up to gain a BA Hon. degree followed in 1978 by a Masters degree in
Ceramic Design at Staffordshire University. It was inevitable living within North Staffordshire that he would become
involved with a thriving pottery industry and after completing his education went to work as a designer for Josiah
Wedgwood and Sons and much later the Moorcroft Pottery.
Living close to the beautiful Peak District, a lover of adventure and the outdoors and the distractions at
University lead Phil into the climbing world. He would be off at every opportunity with his brother Gary, climbing
and exploring and eventually being tempted by bigger challenges abroad. In addition to his work as a designer he
has illustrated many climbing and walking guidebooks for the British Mountaineering Club and the Climbers Club of
which he is a member. He has climbed in many parts of the world and in some cases been able to view bird life from
a very close perspective.
These two combinations of art and nature have lead Phil into painting many wildlife subjects and his detailed bird
studies are always highly collected.
Being a designer Phil has always looked for balance and design in his paintings, the detail coming through possibly
as a result of the type of meticulous work that has always been demanded by now a declining English ceramic
industry. He is now a freelance designer and full time artist working with many creative companies from his studio
in North Staffordshire. He has held several one man shows throughout England and he has exhibited his work at the
Royal Academy.
