The idea for this painting came from watching
nesting sparrows in an abandoned farm building in Ripon, North Yorkshire.
The strong lighting on the wall contrasted wonderfully with the dark
holes which were formally used as primitive windows, but now formed
a perfect nesting place. Although I enjoy watching sparrows, I wanted
to incorporate a pair of kestrels in the scene, which I had watched
nesting in Portugal some two years previously.
