This painting was inspired after watching Barn Owls hunt on several occassions over the mosses and farmland of west Lancashire. The owls can be frequently seen hunting the rough ground alongside irrigation channels and drainage ditches, in search of voles and other prey species, as well as using the many roadside fenceposts to perch up and survey the landscape. This individual is portrayed on a typical perch, having ventured from its roosting site following a period of heavy afternoon rain.
